Starting 1st of July, 2024, the previous streams under this visa have been renamed with some changes in the eligibility conditions, stay period and course-specific extensions.

The new streams are:

  1. Post-Vocational Education Work stream (renamed after Graduate Work Stream)
  2. Post Higher Education Work Stream (renamed after Post-Study Work Stream)
  3. Second Post Higher Education Work Stream (renamed after Second Post-Study Work Stream)

Note:

A Replacement stream previously existed under Subclass 485 until June 30th, 2024. Starting July 1st, 2024, the replacement stream is abolished.

The 2-years extension of each stream for ‘select courses/degrees’ will also no longer exist starting July 1st, 2024.

Second Post-Higher Education Work stream Second Post-Study Work stream No change in eligibility criteria (50 years)

 

Post-Vocational Education Work stream

Students who have already completed their highschool studies in any institution outside of Australia can go to Australia for Graduate level education in an Australian institution with this visa.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be under the age of 35 years.
  • Must be holding a valid student visa, if not, then an appropriate Bridging or Substantive visa.
  • Must have studied a course to obtain a qualification that meets the Australia study requirement 6 months prior to application.
  • Must have applied for skills assessment for an occupation nominated from the ‘Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Health insurance, character check and English language skills.

Post Higher Education Work Stream

This visa stream will allow international students to study a postgraduate course in Australia after they have completed their graduation from an Australian institution and will permit students to work so they may pay for their education and living. For additional support, the student can also include their direct family members (partner, child etc.) to live in Australia with them.

Eligibility:

  • The student must be under the age of 35 years for Bachelors (including honours) and Masters (coursework related).
  • 50 years acceptable only for Master (research), Doctoral degree (PhD) students, and/or Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders
  • Must be holding a valid student visa, if not, then an appropriate Bridging or Substantive visa.
  • Must have studied a course from a CRICOS (commonwealth)-registered education provider to obtain a qualification that meets the Australia study requirement 6 months prior to application.
  • Must have applied for skills assessment for an occupation nominated from the ‘Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)
  • Health insurance, character check and English language skills.

Second Post Higher Education Work Stream

This Visa allows graduates from Australian institutions to stay longer after their post-graduation if they already hold a Post Higher Education Work Stream that is soon to expire. This visa is for students who wish to enrol into higher studies after their post graduation is complete and the visa also allows students to work and earn while studying.

Eligibility Requirements for Second Post Higher Education Work Stream

The Second Post Higher Education Work Stream is available only to applicants who already have a Post Higher Education Work Stream. Therefore, the requirements that must be satisfied for this Visa are already included in the previous stream.

Benefits of the Subclass 485

A Subclass 485 will allow international students to

  • Study a graduate, post-graduate or a higher level course in Australia
  • Work in Australia to pay for their education and living cost
  • Bring their direct family members to live in Australia with them for additional support
  • Visit other countries and return to Australia as many times as they wish
